The TRUTH About Cruelty Free Cosmetics – They Aren't Free From Cruelty

The term “Cruelty Free” in cosmetics is absolutely misleading. Less cruel may be more accurate, but cruelty free? Not accurate. What are cruelty free cosmetics REALLY? Who may still be harmed in their production? Let’s talk about it.

  1. What kind of ignorant idiot thinks bugs are not animals?!??

  2. well could someone reccomend me something for sensitive skin? ive been lied to 😥

  3. I don’t understand your angle here. You say you’re not condemning vegans or consumers who are cruelty free, yet you make whole video slamming these companys that are at least trying to be less cruel and fail to mention all the hype popular companys that do test on animals and or allow China to. I don’t think most consumers are under false perception that cruelty free brands arent still corporate machines. We know that, but we want changes and we can’t justify supporting brands that knowingly give the middle finger to animal ethics.
Why dont you make a whole video on all these brands and youtubers who knowingly dont give a crap.

  4. @AnnetteSloan-n4w April 18, 2025 at 9:54 pm

How is it legal to say cruelty free if it isn’t?

  5. Subscribed

Just watching this video. Jen I love the small research that you have done, to teach us all something about cosmetics. I certainly did learn a thing or two. I love your content.

It’s not just cosmetic glitters and biodegradable cosmetic glitters that are alike and, therefore, using the latter is a form of greenwashing, but almost any type of biodegradable plastic is as damaging as regular plastics. They will last about as long as regular plastics because the biodegradable ones needs to be exposed to certain amounts of light, moisture and heat to break down. They do not get these conditions in dumps and so they just hang around indefinitely. Furthermore, because they are seen as the "beneficial" form, sometimes the biodegradable item is made more substantial in its construction which makes it even more difficult to break down. Truly, the answer is consumers need to get themselves under control so they aren’t buying way more than they need, which will cause the overall supply output to diminish, and companies need to make things that are reusable or slimline so what is made isn’t hugely increasing overall waste.

Good video, thank you for highlighting the part about Chinese workers. Especially with the country’s use of slave labor in Xinjiang, 996 work hours, terrible work conditions (factories collapsing because of absolutely no safety standards), and forced pregnancy tests/abortions for paychecks, I try to be very selective about buying from China. Even moreso for something as trivial as makeup. So many makeup companies have zero idea what the people manufacturing their products are even like and how they treat their workers. I recently saw Beauty Bay has an emphatic statement on their website where they both investigate the factories making their products and enforce strict compliance standards on the companies they sell. I wish more companies would care enough to do that because cruelty to human beings is still cruelty in the production.

    Keep up the great work!

  8. I feel like products for people SHOULD be tested on people before entering the market. Products imported from China should be tested for impurities in the user country. I have heard too many horror stories about feces/heavy metals and such found in products we smear all over our faces.

  9. Veganism is about reducing harm as much as possible. And considering so much of the crops that are grown globally are specifically for livestock feed, reducing your reliance of animal products lowers the amount of death that occurs – not just for farm animals, but also for wildlife.

  10. @Unpopular-channel April 18, 2025 at 10:00 pm

I prefer things that is tested on animal than humans .

  11. i find nowhere if kaleidos ..if cruelty free or not ??

  12. @facesculpturesbyshweta April 18, 2025 at 10:01 pm

Because it’s junior going to be hypocritical if you are not and talking about crop deaths

  13. @marialopresto2976 April 18, 2025 at 10:02 pm

I’ve been fooled before, I miss makeup but I don’t trust anyone anymore

  14. What shampoo and rinse do you recommend?

  15. @ArrunganzPrincess April 18, 2025 at 10:04 pm

calling non-vegan products cruelty-free is such a scam.

  16. @laurameszaros9547 April 18, 2025 at 10:06 pm

A truly vegan lifestyle is about minimising harm to animals as far as it is humanly possible to do so. Moreover it is of course true that it is impossible to live a completely vegan regime. However everyone should feel a responsibility to cause as little harm to animals, the environment and fellow humans.

  17. I still don’t understand the difference: ,,products are not tested on animals” (meaning cruelty free) vs. ,,it doesn’t mean neccessarly that animals weren’t hurt?” 🤔 Can anybody please explain it to me? If it’s not tested on animals, then animals aren’t automatically hurt; that’s how I get it, but I’m obviously wrong by what you’re saying. Thank you for the answer. 🙂

  18. They’re cruelty-free if listed as cruelty-free and vegan 😉

You’re falling into *the black and white fallacy.* Any bit of change is important – especially when it comes to things as useless as cosmetics.

  19. Bugs are living animals for sure..❌⭕❌

  20. I use only IT cosmetics and pacifa. I know that some of their ingredients might include ingredients and it makes me sad. However, if I can find companies that do not test on animals I will gladly use them.

  21. I vote we test on people who are in prison for….you know…

  22. Wow!!! This was so eye opening. Learnt alot! Just subscribed to your channel

  23. 👏👏👏👏👏 excellent. Excellent. Thank you. Would love the beauty world to tackle these topics more and more. It’s time to dive deeper than unboxing and swatch videos! Those are still fun of course, but love the integration of more "grown up" discussions. Thanks for leading the way, Jen!

  24. @marialopresto2976 April 18, 2025 at 10:14 pm

They could just test on prisoners

  25. ❤ awesome video! Thank you for sharing

  26. 🤣😂off course bugs 🐛 are animals ! Omg you have a lot of patience

  27. your point about pesticides is not too smart… it’s like saying walking is not cruelty free because u can step on ants… being vegan/cruelty free is never about being perfect at it, it is about causing less cruelty. i think that’s obvious for every rationally thinking person

  28. Let’s not go to another country, in NY there’s a lab that hires immigrants and while it pays above minimum wage, they don’t offer benefits and safe working conditions with the proper equipment for work. A lady told me they had her cleaning things with acetone in an environment where air wasn’t circulating and only a surgical mask. She fainted with a bloody nose. I saw several popular cosmetic brands being manufactured there. Lack of heating in the winter and only fans operating in the summer.

  29. Great vid info, as always. Something that came to mind was "nano" ingredients and/or "nano" coloring. I read this in a package of an eyeshadow palette that was on sale during Ulta’s 21 Days 2021, and I skipped it because it’s been only a couple years recent that I’ve heard the word "nano" in other products. Since it’s a more "recent" thing, where have they done their "tests" or when? That just made me look more into it.

  30. Thank you for the great information, I’m cleaning out my makeup and trying to educate myself more on this topic. Please advice what makeup brands is "clean".

  31. @facesculpturesbyshweta April 18, 2025 at 10:23 pm

Hope you are a vegan too

  32. @MaliceInWonderland0603 April 18, 2025 at 10:27 pm

    🌸🤍🌸🤍

  33. I get what you’re saying. But you’ve got to start somewhere. Why buy makeup that’s been tested on animals when plenty of companies don’t do testing? It’s not necessary to have makeup. I still do think we need animal testing for certain things like pharmaceuticals.

  34. Well if they are crushing bugs they aren’t cruelty free. Just don’t wear make up.

  35. Thank you for a great video..

Also,, perhaps a good long look needs to be taken into the production of natural hair makeup brushes? Now, there’s a topic that people tend to turn a blindeye towards. 😉

  36. This year I made the switch to prioritizing humane work conditions over animal testing and to support both when I can. Flower Beauty’s is an affordable more ethical brand for anyone interested. The only exception is their makeup brushes made in China and I didn’t find anything suspicious about the parent company (which also owns Kristin Ess, Mindy McKnight’s hair line, Collab Beauty, and Believe Beauty). Milani also allows you to search for products made in specific countries on their website.

  37. @sweetleilaniheavenlyflower April 18, 2025 at 10:31 pm

    Anyone have an update?

  38. I am about 90% cruelty free as marketed. I love Mac and I like natural hair brushes. Great information. Mad love..❌⭕❌

  39. If you eat animal products, you are not cruelty-free. If you want to prevent crop deaths that is an argument for veganism as crops must be grown to feed the animals you consume. Less crop deaths are involved in a vegan diet. If you are eating animals you are complicit in animal cruelty to a much larger extent than using non-cruelty free cosmetics.

  40. I want our government and other governments to define these current marketing words like cruelty free, provide guidance, and audit labs and makeup companies to ensure they adhere to those guidances.

  41. @abigailkirkham9120 April 18, 2025 at 10:36 pm

Yup the only way is cruelty free and vegan, and then look at the parent companies and go indie instead

  42. people are outraged at Loreal, maybe be outraged at China instead

  43. All this goes back to the message, women get ,that they need to improve their looks, when there is nothing wrong with our looks. It’s all about the money.

  44. So what are we supposed to do?? It seems no matter what it hurts the environment or animal. Is anything truly free from hurting something?

  45. Bugs aren’t animals? Jesus..people need to go back to school. I bet they don’t even realize that we are animals as well. Smh.

  46. Excellent video.

  47. It is complex subject! But I AGREE with you! Many ingredients been tested billions times and yet they keep doing and on HELPLESS ANIMALS SUFFERINGS! Even the company dont have to or can use alternative tests like you mentioned! Bloody BUSINESS and Money the testing on ANIMALS ! I buy only CRUELTY FREE and VEGAN if possible! And you Right we have to ADVOCATES for HELPLESS ANIMALS who Suffer and SACRIFICE for another product! I signed many petitions to different people and places and calling Company’s and I don’t give up but Everything i feel is going nowhere yet! I bet it is All About BLOODY MONEY AND BUSINESS ON ANIMALS SUFFERINGS! THAT IS WHY WE CAN’T DO MUCH! But even if we avoid buying less products or only CRUELTY FREE and EDUCATE PEOPLE about ANIMALS SUFFERINGS i PRAY PEOPLE START CARE AND THE TESTING AND USING ANIMAL BY INGREDIENTS WILL STOP! AT THIS TIME WE HAVE LESS CARING FOR ANIMALS PEOPLE AND IT DISGUSTING HOW HUMANITY GOES DOWN! JUST SAYING!

  48. @Unpopular-channel April 18, 2025 at 10:41 pm

Animal means in that respect those that have central nervous system. Those feel pain.
